The rumor: You can exercise away cellulite

A lot of workouts are marketed as fat-blasting and cellulite-shrinking. Instructors claim that if you only knew the right moves, your trouble zones would disappear and your body would be dimple-free. But can certain exercises really get rid of cellulite?

The verdict: Exercise can reduce fat, but there's no way to spot-treat cellulite

"Getting rid of cellulite requires proper exercise, nutrition, proper circulation and the control of fat-storage hormones (that are) more prevalent in the lower body," says personal trainer Ariane Hundt, founder of Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp.

What are the supposed "treatments" for cellulite?

Many people dislike the appearance of cellulite and prefer to have skin as smooth as they possibly can. Therefore, much has been written about cellulite, and many treatments have been promoted, ranging from dietary changes to cellulite creams and mechanical treatments. Some of these therapies include.

1. Methylxanthines: Methylxanthines are a group of chemicals that include aminophylline, caffeine, and theophyilline. These chemicals are present in many cellulite creams and are promoted as treatments for cellulite because of their known ability to break down fat stores. However, skin creams cannot deliver the required concentration of these chemicals for the length of time required for significant fat breakdown. While studies have shown a small reduction in thigh measurements with some of these preparations, they do not promote significant loss of cellulite.

Is Cellulite Forever?

Some claim creams can bust the bulgy bane of many, whereas others swear by pricey procedures. But what is cellulite? And can it really be banished for good? A doctor gives the bottom line

Cottage cheese, orange peel, hail damage. By any other name, cellulite may still throw the perfectly sane into a tizzy as winter pants and coats are doffed for more revealing spring and summer styles.

This cultural anxiety has meant big bucks for some beauty product–makers and medical practitioners alike. A barrage of products and procedures promise to seek out and destroy the lumpy fat on thighs, bottoms, arms and tummies, but a miracle cellulite assassin has still yet to be uncovered.

Cellulite: Causes, Treatment, Prevention

Cellulite is a condition in which the skin appears to have areas with underlying fat deposits, giving it a dimpled, lumpy appearance. It is most noticeable on the buttocks and thighs, and usually occurs after puberty.

Cellulite is also known as adiposis edematosa, dermopanniculosis deformans, status protrusus cutis, and gynoid lipodystrophy in the medical field and as orange peel syndrome, cottage cheese skin, hail damage, and the mattress phenomenon in colloquial language.

Dermatologists say that cellulite may affect up to 90% of women at some point in their lives.

Cellulite is often classified using three grades:

Best tips for good skin

Diet and beauty tips for a great complexion and smooth, healthy skin.

The skin is composed of three layers: the surface layer (epidermis), the middle layer (dermis) and the deep layer (hypodermis). The epidermis is several layers deep. Cells are created in the lowest layer and take about a month to move to the surface, where they then die. What we see as our "skin" is actually a layer of dead cells. Washing with a cleanser helps to slough off the dead skin cells, leaving the skin looking more vibrant. As well as getting rid of dirt and sweat, cleansers also remove blemish-causing bacteria from the surface layer.

While age does slow the process of cell regeneration, the cycle never stops. The health of these new cells is affected by the food and drinks you consume, your lifestyle and the products you use. Treat your body well, and this will be reflected in your skin. To keep your skin looking good, naturopath Janella Purcell says, "Water is key. Omega-3 from fish oils and/or flaxseed oil is essential. Olive oil, avocado and tahini can benefit the skin. And vitamin E and C are great for skin repair. "

In seven days you can make the changes you need for healthier skin.

Your skin’s health is an indicator of your internal health. Here’s how to keep it looking and feeling good.

Monday

Eat oily fish. Healthy omega-3 fats, which are found in oily fish (salmon, trout, mackerel), help keep skin soft and supple. Anyone with dry or inflamed skin will benefit from increasing their omega-3 intake. Vegetarian sources include nuts, seeds and flax oil, or try a good-quality supplement.

Tuesday

Boost your berry intake. Berries are an excellent source of vitamin C, an important nutrient that helps the skin’s collagen production. Berries are also rich in antioxidants, which help protect against the free radical damage that causes wrinkles. Other excellent sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, broccoli and parsley.

Treatments for cellulite

Forever trying to disguise those stubborn lumps and bumps that cling to your hips, thighs, stomach and butt? All is not lost – these treatments and techniques can help you shift the dreaded dimple

Cellulite doesn’t discriminate, appearing on women at any age and of any body shape, and getting it to leave is no easy feat.

The term cellulite describes the uneven, under-skin fat deposits that create a dimpled look and it most commonly affects women due to the difference in our deep skin structure, dermatologist Dr Eleni Yiasemides says. It’s thought to be caused by three main processes in the dermal layer: an out-pouching of fat tissue; fibrous tissue distorting the skin fat; and a build-up of fluid from poor circulation and lymphatic drainage.

The best ways to treat cellulite

We look at latest the latest in treatments for this frustrating skin condition.

Predominantly found on bottoms, thighs and even upper arms, cellulite strikes women of all ages and all sizes. In fact, it's estimated that up to 90 per cent of women will experience some form of cellulite at some time in their life after puberty.

So what exactly is cellulite? "Cellulite is a connective tissue disorder," explains Emma Hobson from the International Dermal Institute. "Simply put, the structure of the body's fat cell chambers break down and cause this dimpling to appear." Hobson suggests that a likely reason for this breakdown in connective fibres is a poor circulatory system; "Loss of circulation to an area – whether caused by lack of exercise, too much sitting, clogged arteries or nutrient deficiency – can have a serious impact and accelerate cellulite formation."

Cellulite

Cellulite is a term to describe deposits of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue that causes a dimpled appearance to the skin. Cellulite is a common and harmless condition that affects about 90% of women over the age of 30.

Cellulite is a term used for uneven fat deposits under the skin that cause the skin to have a dimpled "orange peel" or "cottage cheese" appearance. It is a way of storing fat and is caused by weakened connective tissue which leads to cells filling with fat.  It occurs when the fat cells enlarge, usually with age, and push through the connecting fibres of the skin, which remain the same size, producing dimples to appear on the outer skin as the fat cells emerge through the connective tissue. Cellulite mostly occurs from the waist down mostly commonly appearing on the thighs, buttocks and hips.

Ways to reduce cellulite

Can you really get rid of those lumps and bumps?

We all have different types of fat in our bodies. Some fat wraps around organs, some wraps around muscles. Other fat lies in thick sheets and yet another type lies just beneath your skin like the fat on a rasher of bacon. This last type of fat is what can turn into cellulite.

Cellulite owes its existence to collagen fibres. These fibres support your skin structure like bed slats under a mattress. They form a mesh, with the skin on one side and the fat on the other. When there’s not enough room for the fat, it starts pressing against the collagen fibres. The more fat that builds up, the more stretched and out of shape the fibres become, until the fat starts to push its way through and around the fibres. You start to see puckering in the skin where the fibres are pulled and lumps and bumps and that’s what we call cellulite.

When you're half naked on the beach, the last thing you want to worry about is cellulite. But don't let dimply skin keep you from slipping on your swimsuit. Instead, stop cellulite—or at least camouflage it—with these tips and products. By Carly Cardellino

FIRST, UNDERSTAND IT

Cellulite sucks because, well, if your mom has it, chances are you do too (aka it's genetic). Lumpy, bumpy skin is caused when fat presses up against the vertical connective tissue that surrounds fat cells in our thighs, for example. This creates a bulging of the cells, resulting in a dimpled effect (picture your skin pushing through fishnet stockings).

But even if it runs in your family, there are ways to minimize its appearance...

EAT A HEALTHY DIET

A healthy diet plays an important role in keeping the signs of cellulite at bay. Eat plenty of fiber and whole grain foods (such as bran and oat cereals), since they help to remove waste and toxins from the intestinal tract, as well as fruits and vegetables.
